Another hot spot for diving in the Western Province is Munda, on New Georgia Island, perched along the edge of picture perfect Roviana Lagoon. There are several great dive wrecks off Munda, including a Corsair and a bomber.
One of the interesting reef dives is Tomba-Tuni, a weird mushroom shaped island. One of the most beautiful reef dives is Rainbow Passage, lined with massive seafans and exotic coral formations.
Working out of the delightful resort of Agnes Lodge Hotel in Munda, and situated on the beautiful Roviana Lagoon, Solomon Sea Divers has gained a reputation for professional service and excellent diving.
The operation is run by PADI Instructors Dave and Mariana Cooke, plus their fully trained staff. Munda Diving Sites
SHARK POINT – Dropping off an incredible 4kms into the Coral Sea, this site lives up to its name with sharks, huge shoals of fish, pelagics and eagle rays
CUSTOM SHARK CAVE – The volcanic island of Ndokendoke has an amazing cave system that penetrates from a fresh water pool in the middle of the island, to a cavern that opens out onto an 800m reef wall. whether as an experienced diver you start the dive with a penetration of the cave system, or as a less experienced diver, explore the cavern by entering from the outside wall, this is one of the most exciting dives you’ll ever do! Complete the dive on the drop off, alive with fish life and ablaze with soft corals, sea wips and colourful sponges.
TOMBA-TUNI (MUSHROOM ISLAND)– Perched on an extinct volcano, Tomba-Tuni is indeed a “mushroom”. Step off the island straight into 500m + blue water. Overhangs carpeted with soft corals and gorgonians, outstanding visibility and big fish action make this a photographer’s dream.
RAINBOW PASSAGE – One of the most colorful dives in the Solomons, this site offers sharks, turtles and teeming fish life, plus an impressive array of corals (including the seldom seen tubastraea micrantha or “green coral trees”), gorgonians, sponges and invertebrates. Add to this the “Cabbage Patch”, and you have one of the most diverse coral gardens in the Pacific.
CASI MARU – This WWII Japanese freighter lies in Mbaeroko Bay, about 50 minutes boat trip from Munda. Despite a desperate effort to camouflage her whilst off loading fuel and supplies, she was noticed by local scouts and subsequently strafed. She sank at her mooring along with a barge and another small boat, which now rest alongside her. Although only 700 tons, Casi Maru is a great poke around dive for wreck enthusiasts. Due to her shallow depth of 16m, bottom time is not a problem. For groups of 4 or more.
HAEPE PINNACLE – Rising from the deep water surrounding the island of Rendova, this coral mount attracts a wide variety of fish life. Like similar pinnacles in the Coral Sea, it is patrolled by numerous sharks, kingfish, barracuda and trevally in addition to being home to many of the larger reef residents such as bumphead parrotfish and Maori wrasse.
TOP SHELF – The gentle current that sweeps this shelf at 25m attracts large shoals of unicornfish, surgeonfish, batfish and barracuda. Sit back and watch the world go by at this relaxing site.
LANGARANA ISLAND – Explore the numerous cracks, holes and hidden swim-through formations on this beautiful wall that drops off into the deep, blue waters of the Blanche Channel. Covered in green and lilac coloured tube sponges, sea fans and colourful soft corals, the wall is lit up by shafts of sunlight penetrating the overhanging tree canopy. Even as shallow as 5m below the surface large Gorgonian fans can be seen at “the nursery”, guarding a hundred or more small fans.
SBD DOUGLAS DIVE BOMBER – This historical wreck lies intact in 12m of water, inhabited by plentiful marine life. The pilot of the aircraft, Lieutenant James Dougherty, recently visited Munda to have a look at his plane, now resting beneath the calm waters of the Rendova Lagoon. Lieutenant Dougherty was hit by Japanese shore guns in Munda during a dive bombing raid in 1943. He managed to fly the damaged plane to Rendova Island, which had been secured by US troops 2 days before. Lieutenant Dougherty was transported back to his unit in the Russell Islands by a P.T. Boat form nearby Lumbaria Island, base of J.F. Kennedy and his P.T. Boat 109 , during WWII.
OTHER EXCITING DIVES – Aussie Point, Nusa Roviana Wall, The Big Clam, Kundu Kundu Hite, Munda Bar, Eagles Nest, Patangongo, Isuna Wall, Nguzu Head, Tasker’s Wall, the American Dump, the Wildcat and the “Nell” bomber.
