How do I travel in Fiji?
Matangi Private Island Resort Fiji
Matangi Island Luxury Resort
Matangi Island Resort
Many dive experts consider the northern area of Fiji to be some of the best diving in the world. Matangi Island Resort is located right in the middle of it! Most of Matangi's dive sites are within 20 minutes of the island by boat.
Matangi's experienced dive staff picks the day's dive sites based on the tidal flow. Diving a site at the wrong side of the tidal change will mean that the soft corals will not be open to their full beauty. Diving a site at just the right (tidal) time will provide you with an experience you won't forget! Matangi Island Resort's dive staff has been diving these waters for many years, and know the best dive sites to visit based on the tides and weather.
PADI Certification courses are offered at the resort. Discover Scuba, Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Open Water Referral and refresher courses can also be arranged. If you are considering taking a scuba course, please check with us in advance of your trip, to allow the resort proper time to prepare for your arrival.
Matangi offers shore dives and snorkeling off the resort's front beach. Unlimited complimentary shore diving is available with a 5 day/10 tank pre-paid dive package. Matangi has a small reef where you can find clown fish in their host anemones, lion fish and many other types of tropicals. The diving in front of the dive shop at Matangi is truly an underated "muck dive".
Just a few yards from the dive shop you can find giant clams, numerous live shells, nudibranchs, several varieties of shrimps and small crabs, garden eels, and if your really paying attention, a Cockatoo wasp fish, frogfish and an occasional rare seahorse. Matangi's dive boat will depart each morning around 8:30am. Matangi generally does 2-tank dives in the morning, and return to the resort for lunch at approximately 12:30pm. The resort provides coffee, hot tea, water, snacks and fresh towels aboard the boat.
Matangi's dive boats are covered, but you should always wear sunblock, especially if you are sensitive to the sun. Please make sure to keep hydrated and drink a lot of water.
Once at the dive site set up your gear up on the boat, and then do a giant stride into the sea from the platform located on the stern. If you have a problem entering the water with your gear, they will assist you and carry your tank to the platform, or hold it in the water for you. When you are ready to come out of the water, your divemaster will assist in getting your gear in the boat, you are not required to climb a ladder wearing a tank. There will be a guide in the water at all times during your dive. Matangi Island Resort's guides give thorough dive briefings. If you are traveling alone, the guides will buddy you with another diver. Diving guides are there to assist you, and to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable dive. Every six divers will have a dive guide.
After you arrive you will find on your resort bure's verandah a mesh bag which is marked with your bure number. Once filled with your dive gear, the bag will be collected from your bure by Matangi's dive staff. Your gear will be washed daily and stored neatly in the Activities Center for the duration of your stay. If you did not bring your own gear, the resort can supply the gear you require, at an additional charge.
All of Fiji's dive sites are selected according to the daily tides and the weather. Matangi does not dive deeper than 130 ft. Visibility varies with the time of the year and the dive sites, but usually averages between 50-100 plus feet. Water temperatures vary from 78°F in Fiji's winter (June-Sept) to 80°F+ in Fiji's summer (Oct-May). The dive boats do NOT anchor on any of Fiji's dive sites. The boat will drop the divers and guide and then follow the divers. When you are ready to surface let the guide know and he will point you in the direction (away from the reef) where to surface where the boat will pick you up. Matangi Island Resort highly recommends that ALL divers carry safety sausages.
Unlimited complimentary shore diving is available with pre-purchased 5 day / 10 dive package. The dive staff ask that that you always dive with a buddy, and that you check in with the dive staff at the Activities Center prior to entering the water. If you don't have a buddy, check with the Dive Staff to see if they are able to dive with you.
Additional Afternoon Dive:
A minimum of 2 divers are required for an afternoon boat dive, at an additional charge. Matangi may use a smaller boat if there are only a few divers. The afternoon dive (a single tank) is only done in conjunction with a 2 tank morning dive. A 2/tank afternoon dive may also be arranged.

Generally diving boats will leave for a night dive at around 6.30pm and return for the resort for dinner after the dive.
Special Day Trips
All Day Dive Trips offer divers at Matangi an additional realm to diving. Day Trips offer divers a 2 tank dive. The resort provides a picnic lunch, allowing a third dive after lunch. These Day Trips open up wonderful areas including the SomoSomo Straits, Qamea, Motui, Nanuku, Ringgolds, and Miller Reefs. I wanted to say thank you for everything you did for our trip!!! We had an amazing time!!! Matangi is an incredible place, there are no words to describe how unbelievable our experience was.
Do you rep only places in the South Pacific or do you stretch to other areas? Just wondering for future travel
We got back from Fiji on 10/20/15 and have been trying to catch up on sleep ever since. The jet lag really hit us hard on the way home. We had a wonderful time in Fiji in spite of some inclement weather. The seas were a bit rough while we were on the Island Dancer II so we didn't get to dive some of the usual sites. However, the diving was still great and the corals were phenomenal. We enjoyed our brief stay at the Taveuni Island Resort. We dove the White Wall and went to the Tavoro waterfall while there. However, our stay in Matangi was probably the highlight of the trip. Kay runs a wonderful resort and she certainly sets an example for her staff as she is so friendly and accommodating. We're sure you probably heard that she upgraded us to a treehouse because of South Seas Adventures great relations with Matangi. Even though Chuck doesn't like stairs (because of his prosthetic leg) he was willing to walk up the 44 stairs to stay in the treehouse. Our only regret is that we didn't get to see Matangi with the sun shining. We arrived in rain and left in rain with a few dry/cloudy spots in between. We hope to visit Australia again in a couple of years and we will definitely add a side trip to Fiji and most likely Matangi also.
Thank you very much for helping us organize such a wonderful trip. I will certainly write reviews for South Seas Adventures and Matangi on tripadvisor.com (just give me a few days, I'm still catching up on laundry).
We had a great trip, thanks. Fiji is a wonderful country. I think the people are my favorite of any place I have been.
Matangi was our favorite by far--perfect. If we ever return to Fiji, we will go there again for sure. Horseshoe Bay is my favorite beach I have ever been to. We loved Christine.
Thanks for arranging our trip.
We will likely do another trip to this part of the world in a few years and will be in touch.
When someone plans a vacation, half a world away, to an exotic location like Fiji and then adds in a 30th anniversary, one tends to have very high hopes and expectations. I can honestly say that those hopes and expectations were exceeded! You did a fantastic job, thank you.
And to be able to also meet you and Don in person was a nice treat. A few days before I was kidding Rhonda on Koro Makawa that you must have a lot of guts since by the time we met you we would either be very happy or ready to feed you to the sharks; needless to say the sharks went hungry. I have already had the opportunity to provide a referral to someone in my office and you can count on others.
I just want to thank you for all your help planning our trip. It was amazing!! It was exactly what we wanted! Perfect location, Perfect People, Perfect Bure, Perfect wedding, Perfect food, Perfect everything!! Thank you so much! We feel in love with the people from Matangi, and when we left, it was like we were leaving family, and was actually heart breaking! After posting our wedding pictures on Facebook, I have a lot of people inquiring about Fiji now. I am sending them your way. Thanks again Gregory!
P.S. Diving was amazing! I did miss the last dive, which was the Yellow Wall, because I was having problems with my ears!
I just wanted to send a quick note and thank you again, so much, for helping us schedule our trip to Fiji. South Sea Adventures found the PERFECT place for Eric and I to go on our honeymoon… Matangi was exactly what we wanted, and far exceeded any expectations we had. We enjoyed every moment on the island, and all of the Matangi personnel were so cheerful and friendly that both of us were quite sad to leave them! If you get a chance, please tell them all we said thank you very much for making our honeymoon more than memorable– they made it perfect.
Wow! Amazing, unbelievable and fantastic South Seas Vacation. We cannot say enough wonderful things about Matangi. You were so right and we could not have been happier. The diving was amazing. Ally was an amazing dive guide. We had her to ourselves for most of the trip which was awesome. The people, food, and activities were unbelievable. Now we just have to adjust to regular life Thank you so much for working with me as I wasted my time hunting through all the options. You couldn’t have been more right about the trip. 10 nights there was the best honeymoon we could have had in Fiji. I cannot wait to go back!
We had an absolutely wonderful time on Matangi Island. Our agent, Sarah, was incredibly helpful as we researched honeymoon options, compared prices, and selected our trip. She was also very helpful with creating our honeymoon registry.
Matangi was a dream comes true. From the moment we arrived, it felt like “home.” We stayed in a treehouse burre, which we loved. Daily activities provided entertainment when we desired it but we also felt very comfortable just relaxing at the resort. The property offers many different places to spend your day. The food was great. Even more important, though, was the staff. They were friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed spending time relaxing with them on rainy days or in the evening learning about the Fijian culture. Matangi offers a place to escape the hustle and bustle of real life, a place to relax and connect, and a place to immerse yourself in local culture. Matangi will always have a special place in our hearts and we are already dreaming about returning someday.
Just wanted to let you know that we had a wonderful time in Fiji! The resort was terrific! The staff was friendly, the food delicious, and plenty of activities! If we had to choose again, we definitely would stay here! The treehouse was beautiful and very clean. We LOVED the trip, the staff, the resort, the treehouse! We went snorkeling every day, we went on the waterfall excursion and pearl farm tour, hike around the island, went on the guided kayaking, and swam in their pool. It was great! Thank you once again for all of your hard work in making our Honeymoon a once in a lifetime adventure!!!!!
Matangi was AWESOME! We loved every minute we had there. I literally cried like a baby when we left. What a beautiful and special place. We will be back someday! The food was fantastic, the staff was fabulous and the room was great! No complaints here! I did have a chance to do a couple dives too which was also great. I have left a review of Matangi on Trip Advisor and I will do so for SSA as well. We met a few other couples who used you guys too! And your signature drink at the bar is a good one ;)
Thank you for providing us with an amazing and memorable honeymoon. I appreciate all that you did for us. The romantic package that you added on last minute was truly special. I am so glad we did not miss out on any of that. Horseshoe Bay is quite an experience. Thank you again!
Looking forward to booking are next trip back there with you in the future!
