Linda Gutekunst, South Seas Adventures Travel Expert and Margaret Ybarra, South Seas Adventures Marketing Specialist recently returned from a trip to Fiji where they had the opportunity to visit a variety of resorts in Fiji including a luxury private island. Below, they will share with you their experiences, tips and reasons why Fiji should be your next vacation destination.

What do you love most about Fiji?

Linda: The people are what I love most about Fiji; their culture rich in history and tradition, their values and the way that they focus on the little things in life - it's so refreshing.

Margaret: I have to agree with Linda on the people being one of my favorite aspects of my visits to Fiji - as well as the peaceful calm that I feel knowing that I am literally on an island paradise. In the fast paced world that we live in - peaceful moments are a wonderful reminder to slow down and live in the moment!

What is your favorite thing to do in Fiji?

Linda: Scuba Dive as much as possible!

Margaret: I love to snorkel and be out on the boat with Spinner Dolphins riding the waves with us.

Linda & Margaret: When we travel together we also love to enjoy a nice cold glass of champagne and watch the sunset!

What is the biggest misconception travelers have about Fiji?

Linda: That Fiji is too far away or that it is difficult to travel to. Although Fiji is quite a distance, depending on where you are traveling from it is a lot closer and easier to reach than many people know. With overnight flights out of LAX & SFO you board the plane at around 9pm and wake up the next day in paradise ready to start your vacation!

Margaret: Many people think that a vacation in Fiji is expensive, when in fact it can be quite affordable. Not only are their resorts of all different categories, from 3 star all the way up to 5 star, but many resorts offer all-inclusive packages making a stay in paradise more attainable than you may think!

Which resorts did you visit in Fiji?

Linda: We visited Wananavu Beach Resort, Vomo Private Island Resort, Likuliku Lagoon Resort, Malolo, Tropica, Sixth Sense Musket Cove and Lomani.

Want to learn more about the properties that Linda & Margaret visited?

Read on for a full recap of their stay at each property.

Wananavu Beach Resort

Wananavu Beach Resort is on Fiji's main island at Viti Levu's most northern point features 34 deluxe bungalows situated along the ocean or among their lush tropical grounds. One of the things that we loved most about this resort was the sunset views from the rooms and their restaurant & bar - which were absolutely spectacular.

The property has an absolutely beautiful swimming pool with a cascading waterfall, tennis court and a private beach surrounded by coral reefs. Plus they have an on site activity center where you can easily book tours and excursions such as village trips, snorkeling adventures and scuba diving trips.

Need to relax after a day of exploring? Trust us when we say that the Wai Spa will provide you all the relaxation you need!

One of the best parts? Their restaurant, which offers delicious international dishes and Fijian influenced delights...plus they have a great happy hour and their Sunset Bar overlooking the beach is vacation perfection!

All accommodations at Wananavu Beach Resort offer air conditioning and ceiling fans, almost all have ocean views, many are located right on the beach and some even feature their own private plunge pool (which we suggest booking if you can).

Insider tips:

  • You must experience the dolphin excursion
  • Try their delicious mojitos on the patio at sunset
  • Make sure to take a trip into town or a local village

vomo private island resort

Vomo Private Island Resort

Vomo Island Resort Fiji is a 5-Star resort property located in Northern Mamanuca islands of Fiji, is what we like to call ultra luxury. Meaning that from the moment you arrive you will be pampered every step of the way. In fact, it's almost like they  know what you want before you even want it...it's that amazing!

Their spacious villa rest either between the palms and frangipani trees on the beachfront or are tucked quietly away into the hillside with stunning panoramic ocean views. All accommodations are fully refurbished and feature a natural elegance and style, keeping with the beauty of the surroundings. One of our favorites here at this property is that every villa at Vomo Island features an extended sun deck with reclining loungers.

We enjoyed al fresco dining at the beach for lunch, poolside for dinner and breakfast - but the most spectacular dining experience of was at the Rocks Bar. Situated on the tip of the island the Rocks Bar features amazing drinks, delicious cuisine and was by far our favorite bar (and sunset location) of our entire stay in Fiji.

Insider tips:

  • Stop by the boutique for shopping
  • Enjoy a massage at the spa
  • Work off all the delicious food with an island run
  • Make sure to experience the 'cold room' for some breakfast treats

The resort is absolutely perfect for families and couples alike boasting adults only areas as well as childcare with wonderful activities for the kids to enjoy while you and your partner indulge in some alone time! At Malolo it is all about reconnecting with family and friends without the distractions of what they call “mod-cons” (phones, computers and internet) - and we loved that after just a few hours we felt completely disconnected and relaxed!

The rooms have recently been renovated and many feature beautiful ocean views, spacious floorplans, four poster beds and private patios or decks.

Insider tips:

  • Make sure to get a drink at the pool side bar
  • Enjoy the game room to get a break from the sun
  • Take the boat over to Likuliku for dinner

The resort offers numerous complimentary activities available such as snorkeling off the beach, kayaks, sail boats, stand-up paddle boards, cultural activities and nightly entertainment as well as paid activities such as fishing, diving, snorkeling excursions and beach picnics.

They offer several dining options including gourmet cuisine at Dicks Place bar and bistro, light bites at the Marina edged Coffee Cove and you can even enjoy cooking on your own BBQ at the world famous MCYC island bar and BBQ.

We especially loved how many activity offerings this property has with windsurfing, kayaks, daily snorkelling trips, and complimentary snorkelling equipment; in addition to neighbouring village tours, paraflying, golf, fishing, sailing, scuba diving, canoeing, hiking & bike riding. If you are looking to be active on your vacation this property is perfect for you!

Lomani

Lomani, which is the Fijian word for love is truly an idyllic island paradise. Catering to adults only, this boutique resort boasts white sand beaches, pristine lagoons, luxury suites and bures as well as spectacular ocean views.

  • Spend the late afternoon at the pool with one of their delicious mojitos
  • Indulge in beachfront bure massage

Last question...what tips do you have for first time travelers to Fiji?

Linda: For the overnight flight to Fiji it's always a good idea to bring, or wear, something comfortable to travel in and to have your toothbrush, face wash eye mask ready for a good night's sleep. I also make sure to have a change of clothes and any immediate items I will need upon arrival in my carry on bag just in case luggage gets lost or the flight is delayed.

Margaret: Pack light - bring lots of cotton and linen pieces that you can mix and match as well as a nice wrap to wear for village visits and cooler evenings.

Linda & Margaret: Be prepared to fall in love with Fiji, the people, the beaches, the adventures and to want to want to come back the minute you leave!
