Tahiti - French Polynesia

The largest of the 118 islands that comprise French Polynesia, Tahiti is known as "The Island of Love".

The entry point into French Polynesia is at the bustling capital city of Papeete. Our international flight on Air New Zealand, the South Pacific's premier airline, departed from Los Angeles late in the evening, and 7 ½ hours later, we arrived into Faaa airport, where our Tahitian adventure began.

We connected to our local hotel for a quick nap and to freshen up, before checking out some of the things that make Tahiti famous.

Whether you are staying in Papeete, or connecting to a neighboring island, a visit to French Polynesia is not complete without a visit to this exciting island.

TAHITI ACTIVITIES

Looking for things to do in Tahiti?

We had plenty to choose from. This 400 square mile island offers fabulous beaches and beautiful resorts, along with wonderful activities such as shopping for black pearls, hiking through the deep green valleys covered with rainforests, sailing the waters, hiking the waterfalls that cascade into cool refreshing rivers, or exploring the wispy cloud covered mountains, which reach peaks above 7,350 feet.

We started our Tahiti adventures with a Circle Island Tour, which gave us a great sense of how the island is laid out.

We continued on with a visit to the dramatic inland waterfalls of Fa'arumai, before deciding to get a little culture by taking a stroll through the world famous Paul Gauguin Museum (we now know why he chose Tahiti to be his home!).

The Seashell museum is a great choice along with a wander around the Harrison Smith Botanical Gardens. Our drive into the stunning valley of Paea was highlighted by a visit to the Marea of Arahurahu, where kings were crowned. We were amazed at the refreshing fern grottoes of Mara'a.

Without a doubt, there is plenty to see and do in Tahiti. Time for some serious beach time!
